Three weeks ago 234 Nigerian schoolgirls were abducted from a boarding school by armed militants suspected to be members of the Boko Haram terrorist group. Some have escaped, but 180 remain lost.
With Kanye being in the media a lot recently, he’s received a lot of criticism about all aspects of his personality, but what I find particularly interesting is when he receives criticism for his aspirations. Kanye says things like he wants to bring about education reform, he wants to start a successful company, he wants acceptance in the fashion world, etc. The common response I hear to this is, “He should just stick to rapping!”
The thing is Kanye did not start his career in the music industry with rapping. He started his career producing and making beats for other rappers. Kanye made these classic songs for Jay-Z and that really put him on the map. Despite his success with producing, his real dream was rapping. The problem was that the most popular type of hip hop at the time was gangster rap and Kanye did not fit into that paradigm. He’s from a middle class background and wore pink polos. He was starkly different from the other rappers at the time.
Note: There is nothing wrong with gangster rap. I hate it when people dismiss it as not being a valid form of music. It’s just that record executives were less likely to take a chance on Kanye because he was different from the current trends at the time.
Everyone told him to just stick to producing. Instead of listening to these people, he worked hard, got a record deal, and made a classic hip hop album. Since then he has continually switched up his style and is still relevant and putting out good work ten years later. Despite achieving all this success, he still aspires to do more. People tell him he can’t do these things but that goes all the way back to when people told him he’s not a rapper. In a world where people are afraid to try, Kanye West puts his whole self out there at all times. I think we should encourage people to try and to do more despite their circumstances. Not dismiss and ridicule them.
Even if Kanye doesn’t succeed, he tried, he worked hard, and that’s more than what most people can say. I find Kanye West to be incredibly inspiring, but I am a huge stan.
